🎵 Personal Reflection on Music Education

Music education has never been just about teaching notes on a page or preparing for exams. For me, it is a powerful vehicle for human connection, growth, and transformation. Throughout my journey—from student to teacher, from Malta to Scotland and back—I have come to see music not only as an art form but as a tool for building confidence, community, and character.

My professional practice is rooted in progressive methodologies such as Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze, and Suzuki, but I do not limit myself to one approach. Instead, I adapt according to the needs of my students, always seeking to create a classroom environment that is inclusive, exploratory, and responsive. Music becomes a shared language, especially for those who may struggle in traditional academic settings or come from diverse learning backgrounds.

One of the most meaningful insights I have gained through my dissertation research is how music can harmonise academic progress with social development. I have witnessed first-hand how students light up when given the chance to express themselves creatively, collaborate with peers, or even participate in something as simple yet profound as a lunchtime music club. These opportunities often awaken a sense of purpose and belonging.

My reflection is also one of critique. In the Maltese system, there is still an overemphasis on academic attainment and insufficient recognition of the arts as essential contributors to student well-being and cognitive development. I believe music should be considered a core subject, not a luxury. Like sports, it strengthens the mind and the body—just in different ways.

As I continue to evolve in my role as an educator and researcher, my goal is to advocate for more meaningful, project-based, and culturally relevant music education. Whether through active listening, performance, composition, or music technology, students deserve the chance to find their voice. My role is not to hand them the answers, but to open the door—and let them explore the possibilities on their own terms.
